At the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig :: essays research papers
Introduction Through the eyes of a British man Paraguay is pictured as a country of eccentricity and contradiction, of beguilingly individualistic men and women. As this TP was written my points of view was the most important information source, disagreeing with the author in some of his statements. He describes a dirty country, and in my defence it is not like that. In relation to the title, in the cover of the book is the photo of a pink pig. It does not say why, but I suppose that it would be on sale in the market and called his attention. Or perhaps, the Inflatable Pig was a premonition of its book: Great by outside, emptiness on the inside. AT the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig Is a book about Paraguay written by John Gimlette, an English lawyer who has come here in Paraguay for visit. But from its beginning, the book is full of errors and plagued of hatred towards Paraguay. ââ¬Å"Paraguay is not merely isolated, it is almost impenetrableâ⬠, why does he said that? Our country is open to travel in and out, for my personal experience, Paraguay is neither isolated nor impenetrable, and I would travel with no problem at all, if I had the means. Commerce in general terms is good here, we import as much as we export. ââ¬Å"It has become a refuge to Nazis, cannibals, strange sixteenth-century Anabaptists, White Russians and fantastic creatures that ought long ago to have been extinctâ⬠. ââ¬Å"The Paraguayans describe their landlocked nation as ââ¬ËSouth Americaââ¬â¢s Switzerlandââ¬â¢. In truth, it is its Cinderellaâ⬠. I do not know anyone who thinks that Paraguay is the ââ¬ËSouth Americaââ¬â¢s Switzerlandââ¬â¢ as he mentioned. ââ¬Å"A by-product of Paraguayââ¬â¢s strong kinship and oral traditions is that no one agrees on anything. History is largely a matter of opinionâ⬠, again, he is completely wrong, why he did not ask some of the good, excellent historians that this country has. It describes the life in Paraguay of that time so excellently that it is peculiar that a man so misinformed as Gimlette that writes a book plagued of errors, has called the attention of the ââ¬Å"elite pressâ⬠, North American. The book was published originally by Hutchinson in London, in 2002. The U.S.A. version just got out. -- This is the second book recently written by an English about Paraguay. In both, the writers did not scrimp poison.

Dbq Essay-European History-Assumptions on Children
During early modern Europe, children were viewed in many different ways which changed how parents chose to raise their children. During the 1500ââ¬â¢s, the mortality rates for children were high, therefore children were viewed as if they were adults and very precious if they survived, many people believed that they needed to treat children harshly to make them strong. In the 1600ââ¬â¢s, children were raised tenderly as they were rational beings that could use reason.Children were viewed in many ways during early modern Europe to be rational, precious, and in need of guidance where these views determined the parentsââ¬â¢ choice in child rearing to behaving harshly to kind guidance. Society sought for guidance for their children in a very caring way. In a letter Martin Luther, a leader of the Protestant Reformation in the 1500ââ¬â¢s, it is written that his thirteen year old daughter had just died and that he is very disheartened by the loss. He loves his respectful daughter .As a father and leader of the protestant reformation, Luther is disheartened at his daughterââ¬â¢s loss, but he loves and respects God taking her away (Doc 2). A common stereotype about women is their personalities and perceptions toward children. Traditionally, the female stereotypic role is to marry and have children. She is also to put her family's welfare before her own; be loving, compassionate, caring, nurturing, and sympathetic. Margaret Cavendish, a duchess, a scientist, and a philosopher expresses her sincerity and is apprehensive of how society should treat children to help them reach their potential (Doc 9).Through the knowledge of a philosophe, Jean-Jacques Rousseau thought that it would be best if you let children make their own decisions, because they will be stubborn if you try to stop them (Doc 12). Childrenââ¬â¢s Games, by Pieter Brueghel, displays the children absorbed in their games with the seriousness displayed by adults in their apparently more important pursuits (Doc 5). Another way people taught their children was through reasoning. Christoph Scheurl believed children are a great reward. He is biased though because he has a son himself and knows of the emotional attachment and bond bearing a child creates, he speaks with only gratitude and expresses his love of his child (Doc 1). Theoretically speaking though, Jean Benedicti ââ¬Å"obligates the child to obey under pain of mortal sin. â⬠Being a preacher, he expects a child to honor God and obey his wisdom (Doc 7). This follows the same circumstances stated in document 10. The English Catholic Gentleman expects highly of his daughter to have reliance on God and help her understand to make her amends to confess her sins to God.John Locke, a philosopher who wrote ââ¬Å"Two Treasies on Governmentâ⬠writes that a person must reason with children to their capacity of understanding. As a member of the Enlightenment, Locke believes people are rational and tabula rasa (blank sl ates) where they can be taught what to do. Changing ideas of the1600ââ¬â¢s into the enlightenment allowed for parents to treat children kindly and rationally (Doc 11). Although some parents taught their children in a kind manner beneficial for the child, some punished their children by putting a negative impact on their well-being.As depicted in document 3, it states that if a man truly cares about his child, he will whip him occasionally to make a man out of him. Generally, Russian households of the 17th century were harsh conditions to live under, therefore the nobility expected harsh discipline as a means to better their children. Michel de Montaigne expresses his opinion on children in a very different way though. He shows absolutely no passion or love for children. The tendency in his essays to digress into anecdotes and personal contemplations was seen as detrimental to proper style rather than as an innovation (Doc 6).In an autobiography, Benevenuto Cellini, a metal crafte r and sculptor, writes that he visited his son that was born out of wedlock and abruptly left the boy crying as he didnââ¬â¢t want Cellini to leave. Since Celliniââ¬â¢s child was born out of wedlock, he will be treated harshly and will be shunned as accustomed of the 1500ââ¬â¢s (Doc 4). As for Henry IV, he was whipped as a child. In a letter to the governess Madame de Montglat, Henry commands her to whip his six year old son every time he misbehaves. Whipping children was common for people to do during the 1500ââ¬â¢s.As king of France, Henry IV wants his son to be strong when he heirs. He believes whipping him will make him a better person. Children were treated in different ways due to the accepted ideas and attitudes of the time from serfdom, the religion, the mortality rates and the Enlightenment. Being the precious gifts from God, children were being treated kindly and also harshly as they were objects as well. Different views of children and raising procedures chang e throughout history due to changes in secular ideas and different cultural movements.

Determine the number of subsets of {mom, dad, son, daughter} 16 3. At MegaSalad, a salad can be ordered with some, all, or none of the following set of ingredients on top of the salad greens: {ham, turkey, chicken, tomato, feta cheese, cheddar cheese, cucumbers, onions, red peppers, hot peppers }. How many different variations are there for ordering a salad? 1024 4. Let U = {q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z} A = {q, s, u, w, y} B = {q, s, y, z} C = {v, w, x, y, z} Determine A ? (B ? C) A intersect (qwyzvx) = {q,w,y} 5. Use the Venn diagram to list the set of elements in roster form. Find A ? B. {b, e, j, h, n, u} Sets (Part II) Also, for the first SLP I want you to put into practice what you have learned about sets and functions. I want you to create three sets, set A, set B, and set C by going through the items you use at work (or in your field). * Set A will be a list of all of these items. {wrench, technical manuals, computer, cigarettes} * Create Set B, from the items in Set A that you think are essential. {wrench, technical manuals} * Create Set C, by taking the complement of Set B in Set A, i. e. all of the non-essential items. {computer, cigarettes} * Are sets B and C proper subsets of set A? Explain. Sets B and C are proper subsets of set A because each element of B is an element of A but B isnââ¬â¢t equal to A. You are a Motor Sergeant in charge of a motor pool and the responsibility to ensure maintenance is properly being conducted. Your set A could consist of all of the items you use while working {wrench, technical manuals, computer, cigarettes} while set B could consist of items you use outside of the motor pool {computer, cigarettes}. Set C could be items that you need while working on a vehicle {wrench, technical manuals}. Both Set B and C are still considered proper subsets of A because each subset contains at least one element.

Explain Why the American Economy Expanded so Much and so Fast Between 1890 and 1920.
Explain why the American economy expanded so much and so fast between 1890 and 1920. Between 1890 and 1920, the American economy expanded hugely at an extremely fast pace. This growth saw, by 1900, people employed in manufacturing, mining, construction and services rise from 4 million to 18 million and the USA was producing 30% of the worldsââ¬â¢ manufactured goods. There were many factors that caused this growth such as the development of the railways, immigration, a large supply of natural resources, the idea of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ and monopolies. One of the biggest factors of the rapid economic expansion was the development in transport and communication systems. The development of the railway provided links that allowed the creation of a national market and access to raw materials. Also, the building of the railroads was a stimulus to industrial development in itself. By 1890, the revenue from railroads was over $1,000 million; double that of the federal government, and the mileage had increased from 30,000 miles to over 190,000 between 1860 and 1900. This development of the railway was partly due to the mass immigration that came from Europe. The huge, sudden growth in population formed an unending supply if cheap, eager labour. Men were paid considerably small wages to complete tasks such as building the railways. Developments in communications such as the telegraph in 1944 and the telephone in 1876 were also very significant. This allowed large scale management to communicate effectively nationwide and meant that companies could establish operations all over the country with no communication problems. Industrial development, sales and purchases were also now much easier to deal with and wide scale marketing and advertising spread across the West. Another important factor of the economic growth is the fact that America had an almost unlimited supply of useful natural resources such as coal, iron, lead, copper and timber. These great numbers of natural materials meant that America could almost become self sufficient and needed not to rely on other countries in order to be stable. The USA was able to put high tariffs on the land to protect their goods from foreign competition and the development of he railway meant that the transport of these goods from place to place was made much easier. Furthermore, the powerful entrepreneurs, such as J. P. Morgan, the Rockefellers of New York and Carnegie also played a big part in this economy expansion. The fact that there was barely any regulations on big business meant that people could pretty much do as they pleased when it came to business a nd companies. These entrepreneurs, controlling much of the economy and the political scene, had a huge amount of control over production and marketing. The development of monopolies; with one firm controlling an entire market with absolutely no competition, and vertical immigration; with one firm controlling all stages of production, these firms were able to become very powerful and rich. This idea of money and power spread to the everyday citizens in America and became a source of inspiration. These entrepreneurs were living proof of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ and gave people more reason to believe that if they too worked hard, they would achieve success. The ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ was a big pull factor for immigrants. It gave the immigrants hope and belief that they could move to the USA and start a new life. In conclusion, there are many explanations and reasons as to why Americaââ¬â¢s economy expanded so much in such a small period of time. The rise of big business meant that the economy was thriving and America were almost self sufficient. However, evidently the arrival of immigrants was a huge factor as they mostly built the entire railroad system, allowing huge advances and developments to be made.

Why Should Eveline Stay Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Why Should Eveline Stay - Essay Example Her father was an alcoholic who was so violent upon getting drunk. This poses the life of Eveline at risk at some times and forces her to look for ways of escaping to another country in order to detach herself from the persistent problems (Franz, 21). The social problems makes Eveline to take moments and ponder over the question of escaping to a far country with her friend and lover named Frank. However, another problem sets in. she is convinced that if she escapes, she would not have solved the perennial domestic problems at home. In addition, she will have given herself even more problems since coping up in an entirely new environment is a challenge. This follows that one does not exactly know what problems and challenges await in such a foreign environment. Therefore, this makes the part of decision-making become difficult with regards to Evelineââ¬â¢s perspective. However, she decides to stay and face the problems, as has always been the case. There are several reasons to justify the fact that Eveline should stay. First of all, Eveline herself is depicted as having many strong ties to her native home. There are several responsibilities that can emerge following the fact that Eveline was the only daughter in her family. Therefore, Eveline played key roles in ensuring that those responsibilities are carried out effectively. Thus, escaping from her home would mean that several of such responsibilities would not have been carried out. This follows that her mother was not around to take all the responsibilities. This follows that her father could not take any responsibility and making him do so would be like inviting more troubles to the whole family because of his violent nature. Therefore, Eveline had to stay in order to ensure that she takes good care of the two children. Again staying with her mother made her get motherly care and favor. This is so crucial in the development of human beings no matter

Summary - Article Example The decision to prohibit the operations of coal plants is a remarkable turnaround since 2007 for the reason that the prior boost in the prices of natural gas suggested an increase in the construction of new coal-fired power plants. Though, recently, less than a hundred of these power plants underwent development because of the unpredictability of regulations over climate change. Evident resistance to the use of coal for the production of electricity is strongly articulated by the public and top scientists whom as well contributed hampering of the operations of new plants. For James Hansen, a NASA scientist, the most decisive step for rescuing the earth at present is to obstruct the building of new coal-fire power plants with no capability to store and emit CO2. On the other hand, the electricity sector is now vulnerable to climate change regulations and the new research on coal-powered plants presents an important image of the effect of coal-plants banning to the price of
